My process for quilling is a slow, hands on process that takes several days. I start by plucking the porcupine quills from the porcupine and sorting them according to size. Another day is spent by washing and dying them by hand using natural and synthetic dyes, making sure each quill takes on a deep vibrant color. Once they’re dry, I prepare them for weaving using both the tack-down and wrapping methods of quilling. I also prepare my base, which is usually felt or leather, to ensure a strong foundation for my design. Every Piece comes together with patience and precision, and I finish my designs with size 11/0 glass seed beads and 18k gold plated findings.
