Cal Nez
For forty years, my work has served as a visual bridge, constructed on the disciplined foundations of gessoed canvas and pressed board. My process is a meticulous balance of tradition and spontaneity; I utilize the deep, luminous qualities of oils alongside the immediate, bold energy of acrylics. By manipulating these pigments with linseed and fast-drying mediums, I create textures that reflect the grit and beauty of the high desert and the complexities of modern life. My primary objective is communication. I weave together Native and non-Native subjects to explore the shared human experience, intentionally steering clear of the private and sacred to focus on the universal. I seek to provoke a visceral emotional response from the viewer—inviting them to stand in the space where ancient heritage meets the contemporary world, and to find a common language in the stroke of a brush.
