Theresa Secord
Penobscot Nation
I use hand harvested and pounded and split ash wood from the Maine woods and hand harvested sweet grass from the coast of Maine to weave traditional Penobscot baskets. I utilize familial wooden forms and tools that have been handed down to me from my great-grandmother from the 19th century. My most recent work expresses my concern for climate change and is an act of resistance in the face of the loss of all of the ash trees, our primary weaving material due to the emerald ash borer beetle.
