in my pottery I do use all natural clay and pigments. Everything I hand gather and collect my materials on our reservation and state. At Acoma pueblo we only have one clay source where we walk to the location, taking backpacks , prayers and offerings. Before we even start collecting. here we dig the clay out from the sandstone layers, the clay i use is fresh water shale. I than take the clay home to process. i break it down into smaller pieces with a hammer and soak in a bucket of water for about three weeks. then i take it outside to dry on a tarp for another few days or till the clay is fully dry. after the dry i can now hand grind my clay into a powder form. after i grind my clay i now have to sift and mix with water. i can now make a pottery. my pigments are all natural clay sand muds and rocks all gathered on my reservation and sate. these i also break down into powder form soak in water. i than strain these pigments through a cloth to get the settlement for my colors.
