Portfolio Example & Artist Statement
Frank Fowler Jr.

I am a self-taught ,Navajo artist born and raised from Kaibeto, AZ. My work is created from real life experiences. My cousin-brother is one of my biggest inspirations. He gave me crayons and paper and with some guidance he showed me I can create beautiful art. I began winning awards in elementary school. As a child, my father would take me to the winter Yei Bei Chei ceremonies. Water Sprinkler, who is a trickster of the Yei Bei Chei came to me while the snow was falling. He blessed me with the fox skin and holy spring water. This blessing stayed with me and gave me the blessing to create this on canvas and share with the world. I often think of when I would herd sheep. Cowboys would be on horseback, and that would spark memories to help me paint what I saw. Those ceremonies are very dear to me and I paint what I see. From 2006 to current I have participated in many shows and won many ribbons. From SWAIA, HEARD mus., Charlotte Hall mus., Autry of L.A., Museum of Man in S.D.
