Description of Material and TechniqueMedium: Tuscarora Raised Beadwork Technique Description: Tuscarora Raised Beadwork is a technique known throughout the art community as “embossed stitching.” Some Tuscarora techniques used in my work include (1) beading over beads; (2) beading in arches where beads lean against one another giving a raised or three-dimensional appearance; (3) Raised Whip Stitching around the outside perimeter; (4) beaded Fringe Work; and (5) Using Sawdust for stuffing pincushions and other whimsical pieces. Tuscarora people call their raised beading either the “Rope” or “Hump” stitch - where beads are sewn in a line that makes a rope appearance. Materials Used: Silk Velvets and Fabrics, Satin Bias Tape, Interfacing, Posterboard, Sawdust Stuffing, Nylon Thread, Glass Seedbeads, (Czech and Japanese), Antique Bohemian Glass Whimsy Beads, Czech Faceted Fire-polished Rounds, and Metal Sequins.
