My primary medium is carved antler - this ancient practice is one that not too many people practice in, in comparison to other media. I work with a variety of deer species of antlers such as whitetail, moose, elk, caribou and fallow. To rough out the piece, I start by using a grinder to remove the surfaces of the antler. Then I will cut the antler into desired pieces by utilizing a reciprocating saw. Once I have a general shape of what I want to use, I then use a Dremel tool rough out the piece. When I am ready to do fine detail work I use a Foredom rotary tool. Sometimes I add color to my pieces by using things like dyes, stove polish, paints, and even burning parts of the piece in some instances. I create contemporary pieces based off of ancient Seneca forms (combs, ladles, figurines etc.), and then I incorporate either modern, vintage or historic ornaments (i.e. beads) into my finished pieces. My practice pays tribute to the ancestors that provided the inspiration for what I do.
