Joseph Naranjo

The materials are gathered locally from the earth: clay, white sand for making a piece, red clay for slip is used in burnishing. Preparing the clay is accomplished using traditional methods (soaking, screening, and mixing). To build the pieces; the clay is hand built sometimes using a (pook-ee), then is pinched and coiled to acquire the desired shape. The design is now applied to the bowl and the piece is carved. It is set out to dry then sanded. Next is applying slip and burnishing the piece, it is now ready to fire. Material for firing are gathered from along the river, and manure from local corrals. Firing is done outside and results in black, red, white colors depending on the way a piece is fired. Throughout the entirety of the process traditional methods are used.
