Portfolio Example & Artist Statement
Nellie Begay

I raise churro sheep. during the spring season I sheer the wool off my sheep. I clean and wash the wool and then I hand card and hand spin the wool into thread. Black, brown, grey, and white are natural wool colors. These colors can vary from light or dark depending on the sheep. I use wild plants as a dye to produce colors gold, yellow, and reddish brown. I use aniline acid wool dye to produce other unnatural colors. I use a vertical rug loom to weave my rugs. My work is more traditional patterns such as Chief's blankets and wide runes designs.
