I am a Coast Salish Artist who works with many materials many of which are locally gathered and prepared. I combine techniques in my work such as carving, painting, weaving, etc in order to create my work. For example, carvings require painting, and cutting serigraphs is essentially drawing with a knife. My favorite carvings are rattles and masks but I also carve paddles, make drums and dance regalia, all of which can be used ceremonially or displayed as art. The pieces don't come alive until after they are blessed and used ceremonially. When it comes to my graphic work, the first thing I focus on is the story. What story am I trying to convey? When I have the answer to what the story is, the design comes much easier. I'm able to essentially illustrate a story and then make design choices off of that idea. This is especially true when it comes to the detailed embossed works that I do.
