My Katsina dolls are deeply inspired by visions and the spiritual world of the Katsinam, reflecting both traditional and personal interpretations. Each Tihu (Katsina doll) is carefully handcrafted from cottonwood root, a material chosen for its lightweight and durable qualities, as well as its significance in traditional Hopi carving. The carving process begins with shaping the raw cottonwood root using a Dremel, along with sanding bits and knives, to achieve fine details and precise forms. This stage requires patience and skill to bring out the unique character and spirit of each Katsina. Once the form is complete, the surface is meticulously smoothed and prepared for painting. After painting, each piece undergoes a curing process with a specialized wood treatment. Each Katsina doll I create is more than just a representation; it is a connection to the spiritual realm and a reflection of the traditions that guide my artistic journey.
