I am inspired by the Woodland Style School of Art which originated and developed in our First Nations communities in northern Canada. Contemporary art based on traditional teachings in fused glass is uncommon. I love the challenge of playing with glass to create art that reflects my community teachings and connections to First Nations culture. In these pieces I took three distinct approaches, although each piece required cutting multiple COE 96 glass pieces by hand, then grinding, fitting and layering them together. I also use actual glass beads as a decorative element in the art, although fusing with glass beads is very tricky and can only be used successfully in moderation. I use different firing schedules as well to create different effects. The story telling aspect of creating my unique pieces is deeply fulfilling. Animals and landscapes play a large part of this, reinforcing the importance of the land and animals to Indigenous teachings - the concept of “All My Relations”.
