My baskets are Traditional/Contemporary. Traditional is the technique of coiling utilizing both the figure eight stitch and the single stitch method. Contemporary refers to the materials used including; waxed linen thread, raffia a palm fiber, silk thread, and nylon thread. The coiling method is one of the oldest weaving forms of basket weaving. Coiling involves wrapping material over a single core or bundle foundation and attaching that material with a single stitch or figure eight stitch. The coil expands in size and shape and can be formed into baskets utilized for utilitarian purposes or used as ceremonial or decorative art forms. I have been weaving with this style for twenty plus years.
